Using Custom Metadata to Add Notes to Aperture

With Aperture there is a lot more power in the metadata inspector than simply adding keywords, copyrights and captions.

How about adding a “custom” notes field to your metadata inspector to help you keep track of your lighting set-ups, functions not typically recorded in the EXIF data, or the billable time you spent on a product shoot.

Here is how to do it:

At the bottom of the metadata inspector (on the left side of your viewer screen) you can toggle the additional views of “Keywords”, “EXIF”, “IPTC” and “Other” along with an “Archive” tab.

By selecting the “Other” tab you can check-off pre-programmed items and add them to the active list in the current metadata editor. For instance, by checking the box next to “Orientation” you can add the Orientation field to see if your image is in Landscape or Portrait configuration.

But, how about adding your own “Custom” notes field to your metadata viewer? No problem! Simply type the word “Notes” in to the “New Custom Metadata” box at the top of the “Other” tab and then click the + button. Then, scroll down to find your new entry listed in alphabetical order of the Name column. And, add a check mark next to your newly created custom field. Your notes field will now be added to your metadata inspector screen!

And now you can add metadata notes to your heart’s content!
